“The curtains were blue.”

What you teacher thinks: “The curtains represent his immense depression and his lack of will to carry on.”

What the author meant: “The curtains were f**king blue.”

Though it was created in relation to the novel, reference to this meme about author intent features regularly in my theatre going reflections; I’d like to think that if the theatre is quality, the curtains are never just blue.

Regardless of the creator’s intent, however, theatre should be a lingering experience and, as such, contemplative pondering should be an integral part.  Fortunately, the Brisbane theatre scene has flourished in recent years, giving appreciative theatregoers much to consider.

These will be my stories from the stalls.
