In celebration of Shakespeare

Statespeare (shake & stir theatre company)

Brisbane Powerhouse, Powerhouse Theatre

October 16 – 17

I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to seeing Shakespeares; his writing is so lyrical that I prefer when his words are given biggest billing, without gimmickry distractions. However, any show that can in some way inspire young people to appreciate the beauty of the bard, has to be merited. Because, of course, Shakespeare is relevant and can still speak to young people. And demonstration of this is at the core of shake & stir’s “Statespeare” production.

The first rehearsal for the Year 12 performance task sees a mismatched group battle it out on the drama room floor, surprising and shocking themselves as they gain a greater understanding of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. By exploring different scenes, they make important discoveries about the works, life, and each other in what is a fast-paced, physical production, which has humorous moments, clever dialogue and many chances for the characters to enjoy themselves. Indeed, Nellie Lee’s sharp script is brought to life with energetic performances and it is easy to appreciate the show’s acclaim. (It has previously been nominated for a Helpmann Award.) “Statespeare” is particularly successful in celebrating Shakespeare’s comedies and is full of irony, satire and wordplay, including some hilarious moments, courtesy of the full flight of fury of a shrew untamed.

Originally co-produced with La Boite Theatre Company,”Statespeare” has been showing at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Inaugural Queensland Youth Shakespeare Festival, which is both a wonderful way of bringing the Bard to Brisbane and a welcome return for this witty work.
